Junk mail has never been a problem for me, as all of the junk I got was either filtered out by Gmail, or by Mail itself. However, ever since I set up my Gmail account using IMAP, the Gmail Spam folder appears in the sidebar in Mail. This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that many of these messages have sexually explicit images attached that show up in the "all images" shortcut in the Finder.

Here is my question: Is there any way to configure either Mail or Gmail to either not download the junk mail or delete it immediately?

I bet Finder is using the spotlight indexer to find and display those images. You should try setting that path to private in the Spotlight system prefs. GMAIL's IMAP spam folder is in ~/Library/Mail/IMAP-[user]@gmail.com@imap.gmail.com/[Gmail]/Spam.imapmbox/

Yeah, that's what I did for now, however I just wish there were some way to automatically delete the junk without waiting for Gmail to do it after 30 days.

No per folder controls of caching, unfortunately...

You could create rule to automatically delete mail in Junk that is older than x days though.
