i've noticed that I have an "Originals" Folder and a "Modified" folder, and each has a copy of all of my pictures, but at different sizes. What happened here? Is there an easy way to remove the duplicates, or should i just export each roll to its own folder, delete everything within the iphoto folder, then reimport all of my rolls?

You should keep both. Don't mess with those folders/files. Let iPhoto organize your photos.

Thank god iPhoto '08 made that directory a package.

I have never liked how iPhoto arranges photos, especially the fact that it doesn't apply titles from within the app to the filenames in Finder. Before importing my photos to '08 I exported them all into folders from the albums (only 2500 photos or so, not too bad) so that they would appear at least somewhat like I wanted, and also so that Spotlight would include results from the photos (nice that it searches within the new library package!
The originals and modified and then thumbs and carry-on, not to mention all of the extra files in the root, are just confusing to my mind. A simple Album/Title path layout, a la iTunes (minus the superfluous "Artist") would make more sense.

Artist is every bit as superfluous as Album. Why do you not wish to get rid of both?
The answer is extremely simple: If you want to use the Finder to manage your images, do not use iPhoto to manage your images.

Except that I like how it organises them IN iPhoto, where I make albums (and now events) with photos inside them. If how it organised them in Finder bore a resemblance to that, I'd be fine with it. Yes it is completely insignificant as they appear as I want inside the app, it's just the pedant in me that feels this way.

If you stay out of the finder like you should, titles in there won't matter to you! What will matter is the titles in the iPhoto app, and that is how it should be. Forget the finder is there and let the app do the work for you! Micromanaging is the Windows way, not the mac way!

haha good point. I just don't like the fact that I have duplicate images taking up unnecessary space on my hard drive. I currently have iphoto '06, and have been debating whether or not to get '08 just for the iphoto upgrade (i've read that the other apps are crippled and deemed almost useless)

Those aren't duplicates. It's the original in case you change your mind and want to do different editing. You might want to do a calender or card or book or something and need another crop for example.
iMovie 08 is totally different, but the install keeps the old version in case you prefer that one. All the other iApps are upgrades to their previous versions. None is crippled or useless (including iMovie), although iPhoto 08 is the largest and most useful upgrade in my opinion. It too will keep all originals of your photos.

not to hijack this thread...
does iphoto (ie '06) compress photos when copying from a camera?
i have a friend who says she cannot use iphoto because of this (she is a pro photographer).
true? and if so, any way around it? (or a better app for organizing large filesize pics?)

No, it doesn't. It keeps the RAW files as originals and you have the option to save edits of RAW files as 16-bit TIFFs.
A better/professional app to organize your photos would be Apple's Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.

But wanting things to look pretty and tidy is definitely the mac way . Having them in the package is a nice way of keeping that mess out of sight, out of mind now though.
While here, when you set the date and time on a .avi file from a camera in iPhoto, it doesn't seem to stick through an export - is this metadata not actually saved with movie files?

the metadata for videos usually sticks through import for me. If it doesn't show up, try typing in the info on the left side to set it there.
