Hello, in iphoto when I select "photos" it says that i have 4.2 gigs of these (all items in my library) but when i go to the actual folder and i hit cmd+I it says that the library is 6 gigs... :S that's like 2 gigs more lying there... are there pictures there that are not in the library?....

has anyone experienced this?

Well I wouldn't call it a controversy but that sound odd.

If memory serves me (I use aperture ) iphoto has a wastebasket that all of the deleted photos end up. Could it be that you have some pictures there, so iphoto does not count those pictures against the total.

Another explanation is you have 4.2 gigabytes of photos but the library is larger as it not only has the images but also meta data, and internal structures to manage the photos etc.

iPhoto stores a copy of your modified and original images. It's possible that iPhoto only tells you the size of the images displayed in your library (modified), and when you look in the finder it totals up all of the images (modified and original).

I think Laminar is correct.
There is an app called iPhoto Diet (I think) which will remove all of your originals. I have not tried it, so I can't say how well it works.

My iPhoto bundle and iPhoto report a 10gb difference, so I'm pretty sure it is all the originals.

Back up your library before running any utility on it. Whether it's safe or not.

No it's not safe! It's actually downright dangerous! Don't do this.

iPhoto: Do not use the Revert to Original command after removing or renaming the original

iPhoto Diet is good -- users just need to make sure they read before the click on the "go" button and make sure they know exactly what they are telling the app to do.
