In a rash of presumed stupidity, I upgraded to 10.4.11 and installed Office 2008 beta in one fell swoop. I now have messed up fonts in Safari:



I think it's probably because Office installed some rogue font... I'm just not sure what to look for.

Ideas anyone?

you might be able to look in your fonts folder and view/sort by creation or modification date.

Checked /System/Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts ... nothing jumped out at me.

Edit: Forgot to check /Library/Fonts ... turns out there is a folder named "Microsoft" that is full of fonts. All the fonts are dated 23 Sept, 2007. Again... not seeing anything of significance... but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

Office 2008 fonts are in /Library/Fonts/Microsoft.

I must say it's about time they stuck their fonts in /Library instead of every user's ~/Library. Also, you should never see any program putting fonts in /System/Library/Fonts. That's off limits to everyone but Apple.

Any harm in me trashing the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft folder?

the beta is from around that time, so the sept 07 fonts are the ones the beta installed or modified

No. In fact, the fonts are an optional install in the Office 2008 installer. You might run into some templates that won't look right since they might be expecting one of those fonts, however.

Not sure what to think... but after an unrelated reboot... everything is fine.

Solution: Use Font Book to "resolve duplicates" then either reboot or quit and restart the problematic applications.

Bingo, that's what I had to do a few days after installing Office 2008.

That's a problem with how they are now installing their fonts. By installing their fonts into a Microsoft subfolder, they are creating many duplicate font instances.

Yes, and I've submitted this "bug" to them....no response of course. We'll see.

Office 2004, and if I'm remembering correctly, v. X did the same thing.
