I have my own domain name with the e-mail that go along with it, however, I can't seem to set up the outgoing mail server to correctly send out mail from my e-mail. My ISP is Verizon and I've heard they don't let any other domains other than theirs to be sent out from their mail server.
Does anyone have a workaround?
My e-mail has been virtually useless because I can't set up Mail correctly. I can get mail since I have my incoming mail server correct, but I cannot send out any messages from my e-mail that is from my own domain.
Is there some sort of workaround to make the outgoing mail server to work?

You can send your domain's email from your Verizon's outgoing mail server. I have the same problem with my bellsouth ISP account limiting outgoing emails. Just go to Mail-> Preferences-> Accounts, choose your domain's account and select your Verizon outgoing email server from the dropdown at the bottom. It will still show to recipients as coming from your domain's account. This will most likely solve your problem completely. If it doesn't, there are a couple more advanced techniques you can use but I won't bore you with them unless this doesn't work.

I'm not sure what your problem is, I have my own domain and email and I also have verizon dsl.
I have 0 problems sending/receiving emails. Sounds like you may not have your SMTP information set up correctly in mail.app.
Review your support documents from your webhost to set up your mail client.
I can understand why its failing if you're trying to use verizon's mail server to send out emails, but they shouldn't and don't care if you use your own and use your own email client to do so.

I have verizon FIOS, and previously DSL, also with my own domain hosted with Earthlink. Back when I was with Earthlink as the ISP, there of course was no problem sending/receiving email because it was the same domain. With Verizon, however, I have to explicitly tell mail.app that it needs to use Verizon's SMTP server, and I had to put my Verizon password in there somewhere in order for it to allow me to use their servers for outgoing email. Incoming doesn't matter, but for outgoing you need to dig that up and enter it in somewhere (I forget where, it's in the Accounts settings.) Once you enter it you don't have to enter it for each outgoing email.

Try sending on port 587, this is the SMTP submission port that many ISPs support using rather than port 25. If port 25 is being blocked, port 587 may not be.

Yeah my web host also recommends port 587 if port 25 is blocked.

To avoid having to setup your mail client to test this, you can simply do a:
telnet smtpserver 587
in your terminal (where "smtpserver" is your smtp server address). If it connects, port 587 is listening.

Thanks...I'll try that.
Funny thing is that I can't even send out from my verizon.net e-mail account either. I was able to at first. Then when I started to try it with my own domain e-mail address, it all started to go wrong, so I can't figure which setting is wrong anymore!

Do the same test I'm describing. What it comes down to is:
1) Is the service listening on the port you are trying to use, and not being blocked by a firewall?
2) Are there any policy level rules in place that would restrict sending from your user or IP?
3) Will it authenticate you?
If you cannot even get a response, both #2 and #3 becomes a moot point. If you can get a response from the server but are being held back in these other areas, you should get a specific error message.
The same tests can be made for your IMAP/POP servers, or any other network service providing you know the ports needed to test.
