Trying to use the Automator action "Upload to FTP" Apple - Downloads - Automator Actions - Upload to FTP
but it always fails. My ftp server shows me logging in and changing directories OK, but then the file upload fails due to timeout occurring while trying to connect to my IP. The server log shows the correct path and filename of the file I'm trying to upload.

Any suggestions? Is this a Leopard thing?

This would be *much* easier to do with an extremely simple shell script and scp or rsync over SSH with public key authentication. It would also be more secure and far less complex.

Does this server support SSH?

Only because you don't know how to use Automator.

I've never used Automator (haven't had a need to), but interaction in scripts is always a challenge. If Automator supports interactivity in entering this person's username and password, fine, but even then since the password would be hardcoded into this script (I'm assuming) this would be a security risk if anybody had physical access to this script, unless this script was a binary app.

These kinds of problems have already been solved. It's hard to recommend putting energy into doing this this way with a pretty outdated, insecure protocol and a Mac-only tool.
