iMovie 7.1 Painfully Slow

I converted a 1 hour standard def DVR-MS file (Mpeg-2 format used by Windows Media Center TV recordings) to DV using Visual Hub in faster than real-time on my 24" iMac 2.4 1 gig RAM. Then I imported it into iMovie which took forever because it wanted to generate thumbnails. I took out the commercials. Then I Exported it back out to DV (because exporting to anything else would take forever again). I'm planning on compressing it down for viewing/archival.

Why is iMovie 7.1 so freaking slow? I know I don't have the optimal amount of RAM but this is crazy.

Should I be using something else instead? The total time spent on this is at least double compared to doing this on my old, slow Pentium 4 Windows machine. I'm thinking about just using Parallels and DVREdit on Windows to do the whole thing and just convert it to something AppleTV/Quicktime/iTunes understands.

iMovie HD is downloading as we speak.

FYI after poking around in the Event that iMovie 7.1 created when I imported my DV file I see that it made 2 little MOV's of my original file! One is a little postage stamp size that seems to correspond to the thumbnails and another is a pretty good 2.7 gig Quicktime file that's probably just what I need except it has commercials! Is there any way to tell iMovie to stop doing the thumbnail thing? There has to be a better way to scrub thru the movie like the freeware programs on my PeeCee can.

iMovie really isn't made for this sort of thing. Use something like MPEGStreamClip.

How's what I'm doing any different from hooking up my DV cam, importing my boring video, cutting out the boring parts, creating a movie to email, YouTube, or send to iDVD?

Yup. Downloaded it and it loads the DV files pretty fast. Now if I could make it edit the DVR-MS Mpeg-2 stream without first converting it to DV then I think I have a winner.
