Since this morning, every hour or so, iCal, whether it is open or not, is throwing up a process that is not responding, and needs to be force quit. What looks like an iCal alarm shows up, but without any information or corresponding event, and beachballs when it is selected.
Any ideas on what this is? I am running Leopard.

When I first installed Leo it was popping up and killing my whole machine. It was driving me so crazy I ended up renaming the app so the system could not find it.

I never use iCal so this solution is not a problem for me.

it lives here:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CalendarStore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/iCal Helper.app/Contents/MacOS/iCal Helper

I dropped into the folder:
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/CalendarStore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/iCal Helper.app/Contents/MacOS/

and renamed the file:
sudo mv 'iCal Helper' '-iCal Helper'

console showed this over and over:

11/4/07 12:30:34 AM [0x0-0x4d04d].com.apple.iCal.helper[431] iCal Helper(431,0xa004df60) malloc: *** mmap(size=2097152) failed (error code=12)
11/4/07 12:30:34 AM [0x0-0x4d04d].com.apple.iCal.helper[431] *** error: can't allocate region
11/4/07 12:30:34 AM [0x0-0x4d04d].com.apple.iCal.helper[431] *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
You can take the dude out of So Cal, but you can't take the dude outta the dude, dude!

How would I tell? I'm not sure what you mean by a new calendar - how do I do that?

Create a new calendar in iCal. I'm not sure how to explain that in another way.

When I go to iCal, and click 'new calendar' from the file menu, it just adds another color with 'unfiled' to the calendar I have already - but I don't think this is what you mean, is it?

Yes it is exactly what I mean. Each calendar has its data retained in its own single .ics file. Test to see whether you can reproduce this problem using this new calendar.

How do I know which calendar is throwing these up? I mean, how do I stop the other calendars from generating them? Thanks for your patience!

Just try creating an event that will pop up in the next minute or two so that you can test this, and make sure there aren't any other events which will generate alerts during this time. This is just a test.

OK - thanks Besson - I think I have the source of the problem. A couple of days ago I let my battery run all the way down, and my Powerbook woke up thinking it was 1969. I reset the clock, but that seems to have been the issue. I left it running for about five hours, and when I got back, the phantom process had turned into an alert of every alert I had ever had in my calendar (about 5 years worth!)
What had happened, I think, was that all of these had gone off for some reason. I think it has been resolved now, thank you very much for your help!
