I am going to format my MBP and was wondering how do I backup my itunes library onto an EXTERNAL HD? I realize there is a 'back up to disc ..' function but I want to back up my music to my external.

also is there a way to revert the song title names after itunes have 'organized' the songs and renamed them?

Thanks in advance

Drag the iTunes folder to the external drive. Done.

iTunes doesn't rename files, it simply moves them around based on artist and album.

iTunes names the files according to the titles you give them. It can also automatically add the track number (if specified in the tags) to the beginning of the name, but this can be turned off in iTunes preferences.

You can also uncheck these items in iTunes Preferences (in the General tab of the Advanced pane):

◊ Keep iTunes Music Folder organized

◊ Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library

True. I don't think I understand the OP's comment... I think my point was that iTunes doesn't change filenames unless you tell it to. I just tested, and changing a file name in the finder and then loading iTunes gives you the same file name in iTunes as originally set... I'm totally confused.
