I tried now for a good while to have apple's mail work with two accounts (one pop, one imap).

It simply doesn't work (See other thread), and I haven't gotten any tips how to make it work.

What's a good and reliable mail application?

Any tips appreciated.

Thunderbird is nice. It is speedy and runs very well. I also like Entourage, particularly 2008 due in a couple weeks, because it feels more like Outlook 2003 (which I like).

Mail works fine for me. I detest XUL.

I'll take a look at Thunderbird.

What's XUL? The company that did Thunderbird?

I couldn't get Mail to send from my web account. Never worked.

XUL is the Mozilla interface framework used by Mozilla apps. It allows Mozilla to easily make their products cross platform.

Mail has the nicest interface and set of end user features, but it is also missing a couple of relatively obvious features for some odd reason. It often performs and behaves like crap, and is rather quirky and buggy for me too at times...

Thunderbird is the best behaved and most compliant IMAP client out there next to Pine. It performs really well, and supports a ton of advanced user features. It is technically the "best" client in many ways, but many don't like its lack of support for Mac-only features.

Entourage, IMHO, is a POS. It's proprietary mailbox format is dumb, corruption prone, and it isn't a particularly well behaving and stable client in other respects either. People that want a MS style monolithic email app use it, and people that want to access certain MS Exchange features use it too, although even then it doesn't do everything that Outlook on Windows does.

I wish Evolution was out on the Mac because it includes an Exchange connector that would provide many users a nice Entourage alternative.

What do you mean by a "web account" anyway? You don't need to use the SMTP server provided by the mail host hosting your email account domain, you can use any SMTP server that supports authentication (as most do these days)

I set up a mail address in the style of me@mywebsite.com in cPanel, then downloaded an installer script, that installed the settings in mail.

I would not know which other server to use, and how to use it. It's my first website, and it's all learning by doing it wrong

I like the interface, but what's a nice face if the brains behind aren't too pretty?

Features are nice, but basic functionality is nicer.

It was so frustrating that every time I sent mail from what should be my commercial account, Apple Mail put my private address in the sender address line. And the sent mails disappeared without a trace. I don't even know if they were received, because there was no track of them.

What is your email provider? Perhaps one of us can help you figure out what your SMTP server should be... Do you have any other email accounts? Like I was saying before, it might be possible to use another SMTP server if your email provider won't let you use theirs...

This can be corrected by modifying your configuration for your account. Let us know if you want to stick to using Mail and one of us can help you here...

Oh, I like mail, and I'd like to use it.

The key question was:

1. Why not one of the sent mail got stored, even though I checked the box in preferences (store on server).

2. Why I could not send a mail from my iMAP account (the business mail address). Even though I clicked the business adress imap account, mail got sent from the POP account.

I use google mail as a POP account, and my IMAP comes from synhosting, my web host. They use cPanel, and you set up your mail there. So I guess it will be the synhosting server that does my mail, or doesn't it?

Do you have multiple sent mail folders? Perhaps Mail is using a different folder for sent mail...

2. Why I could not send a mail from my iMAP account (the business mail address). Even though I clicked the business adress imap account, mail got sent from the POP account.
I don't know what you mean here by "clicked on the business address IMAP account", but it looks like your SMTP server should be simply "synhosting.com":

$ telnet synhosting.com 25
Trying 72.9.158.203...
Connected to synhosting.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220-server01-01.hostingcomplex.com ESMTP Exim 4.69 #0 Sat, 12 Jan 2008 13:13:00 -0500

250-server01-01.hostingcomplex.com Hello netmusician.org [74.130.2.182]
250-SIZE 52428800

250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN

This also indicates that this server requires authentication, so your SMTP configuration for synhosting.com will need to also include password authentication using your username and password.

I use Mail with the WideMail plugin and the HTTPmail (Hotmail) plugin.

That's the weird thing: I have two inboxes, but only one sent folder.

When I click "create new", I have a menu option, where I can choose the account where Mail sends the message from.

I choose my business address, and it sends it from the private address anyway.

Actually, when you set up an e-mail account, you can download a script, that sets up an IMAP account with Mail.

Maybe the script doesn't run well.

I deleted the account and will try to set it up again tonight.

What are your SMTP settings for your business address?

For the record, it doesn't really matter which SMTP server your mail uses to send as long as you have one that works for you. Hell, you could even setup your local Mac to be an SMTP server (although I wouldn't recommend this).

It allows a right-hand reading pane like in Entourage and Outlook 2003/07.

Either tell us what configuration options you have setup for your account, or else give them a call/email or visit their site to find out how they should be set. That's my suggestion.

After I reinstalled the account tonight, I'll send a trouble ticket tonight.

I will check out the configuration options, and the result of the trouble ticket tomorrow.

Thanks!
