I erased iDVD 08 from my hard drive and re-installed iDVD 6.0.3.

Upgraded to 6.0.4.

Doesn't start up. I have never had such a complete non-functioning. The iDVD icon hops just once up and down. For this one hop I have installed 72mb?

I erased 6.0.4, and re-installed 6.0.3.

Doesn't work, either.

I searched the forum for this problem, but it usually concerns iDVD 08 (and this started up without problems).

Quick help appreciated, as I have to deliver a few discs tomorrow.

Just adding:

My search on the web and on older posts on this forum: usually it was recommended to delete preferences, plists, or certain temp files (never said which), and this never showed results. (that's the downside, when many posters don't give feeback if their problem was solved, and how).

---

The encoder server gets active, and when I tried to delete iDVD, it wouldn't let me, as the encoder server was in use. If that's a clue.

The iDVD logo in the dock was replaced by another logo, showing a sheet of paper, pencils, and a ruler.

adding:

I removed all iDVD files, including preferences.

Then I re-installed.

Same result: iDVD doesn't start up.

Nobody has an idea what is going on here?

Maybe apple doesn't want you to go back to an older version and has built in something that prevents re-installing the older iDVD?

How are you installing the older versions? I didn't think Apple had downloadable full installers for the minor point versions. Could it be you're somehow accidentally installing an update and not getting all the files? I'm pretty sure iDVD 6 is a fairly massive install with a lot more than 72 MB.

That was a mistake.

When you drag iDVD 08 into the trash, obviously only a minor portion of the files are being erased.

When I, after iDVD disaster 1, cleaned up the system from iDVD files (through Finder search), the second time it installed 1,8 Gb.

But it still didn't work. Four bounces in the dock was the maximum.

I wonder Apple doesn't allow you to go back, and once you have iDVD on your system, nothing older will work.

Sorry if you've already answered and I missed it: Why can't you reinstall '08? It sounds like that was working in any case.

First I ran DiscWarrior, but there were only three files with a bad directory entry. OS X is really rock solid.

Then I re-installed iDVD 08 (out of sheer "that's the only thing left to do" desperation) and came back to post the result, when I saw you had answered.

Thanks for coming back to this thread.

Yes, iDVD 08, re-installed, opens.

I am wondering: why doesn't Apple let me install an older version?

I just have to figure out on how to get IMovie HD clips into iDVD 08, as there is no media browser, which is used by iDVD 08 to load the files you burn.

PS: Regarding my emotional reaction: maybe I should install a punch bag next to my computer. Punch first, then post.

There should be a + button in the bottom-left that lets you add iMovies in. You can see a video tutorial on Apple's site.

By the way, if you ever try uninstalling it again, since iMovie '08 apparently doesn't include a proper uninstaller (bad form, Apple), you might try using something like AppCleaner or AppZapper and see if they know anything that we don't. I figure it's a decent bet since they've been developed and tested just for this.

You should see movie *projects* in the media viewer in iDVD, but not iMovie *clips*. There is no media browser (like a separate window) but there is the media button.

Sorry for the long delay in responding, but I was out of town and far away from any computer.

I actually haven't had any trouble with iMovie, possibly because Apple "approves" of having the better iMovie HD next to the single field processing lower quality iMovie 08. But I knock on wood it stays like that.

For the same reason there is a way to import clips from iMovie HD into iDVD 08 (haven't tried it yet, just came back, but I don't think it will cause further problems).

Thanks for the uninstaller links. I guess uninstalling via Finder search is somewhat not clean, as not all files might show up there.

Regarding importing movies from iMovie HD into iDVD 08, the manual says "click movie button". Projects showed up. Have to actually import and burn them. I will post this here when I have done it (Shouldn't be a problem, but you know Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda).
