The latest version works on leopard. However, I would get off AppleWorks ASAP.. It's no longer supported.

Yes for all intents purposes its not more. Apple has not worked on this in years and there's been any major update to the suite for quite a long time.

Depending on your needs, you can look at iWork, MS Office or as cats had said neo office.

Of course if it still works on leopard and you like it, there may not be too much harm in still using. The only danger is that if any update to OSX breaks the suite you'll be out of luck as apple will not be updating it.

I still use it daily! But boy, it's getting long in the tooth. I'm so used to it that it's the easiest thing to use, then I'll cut and paste things, as needed, into Word if I have to send something to someone.

I have Pages, too, so should probably migrate over.

But it DOES still work, though I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet. If you're not currently using Apple Works, as I am, and are thus used to it, I'd start with something else.

If it still works, there's no reason why you HAVE to move on to another application. AKcrab makes it sound like the world peace hangs in the balance if you don't move off but seriously if you like it and it still works, keep using it. Just remember as I wrote in my earlier post, there may come a day when apple releases an update that could break apple works but until (or if) that day ever comes keep using it.

I used it, and while its screen presence and layout was good, it was awful to use.

A 100 page document. You do the spell check. You arrive at page 87. 13 pages to go, but you need to get out of spell check, as a certain correction can only be made by input outside of spell check. You want to continue the spell check. Guess where you must start? On page 1.

The interface was not very well organized, to keep it unemotional.

Unless TextEdit and/or Pages/Keynote/Numbers can open AW file formats, I would be very reluctant to continue saving in those formats if I did keep using AW. It might still work now, but your data is becoming less and less portable and eventually you might not be able to recover it all.

Pages *can* open AppleWorks documents.

Sort of.

It kind of messes up formatting.

The format issue is a very good one and I must say, I'm beginning to think it's time to pull the plug on ole' AW. Somehwere I probably still have MacWrite II application laying around, as well as more than one version of Claris Works, AW's predecessors. I had to do a batch convert of all those files because of the formatting issues.

Definitely worth thinking about.

I still think that Apple should maintain this Appleworks application,
as it would then be the Free low end - but useful app for low
end/school users.. then the iWork and other would be the
medium end application.. and the high end apps are all still there..
(high end Photo editors/Databases etc..)

So you advocate apple spend money, time and resources for a product that will not generate any income? That does fly in the face of business sense, especially since they do have a product suite that for intents purpose replace apple works - iWorks.

iWork is an $80 option on a new mac purchase..

I just guess they have moved away from providing even basic
software for people to use.. TextEdit is it...

Just wanted to note that, Pages 3 (in iWork '08) can only open AppleWorks 6.x (WP) docs.
If someone has archives containing older files, saved by AppleWorks 5.x [or earlier]... then
they would need to be opened by AppleWorks 6 and resaved, before Pages 3 will touch 'em.
