I've gotten into a bad habit of falling asleep while watching DVD's on my Mac Pro. Then, a few hours later, I wake up to looped menu music and my glaring monitor. Is there any way to set DVD Player to close on its own once a dvd has finished playing, rather than going back to the main menu to endlessly repeat?

Yes, pause the movie and hit Apple+t. That's the timer function of DVD.app.
