Help with Disk Utility formatting an external drive

Does anyone know how i can format an external firewire dirve when for somereason Disk utility says that i dont have permission to do so. I can only "read" of the drive?

Select the drive, go to the Erase tab, then click the "Erase..." button. I don't see anything that mentions "read" permissions.
