I heard from a friend that you can block your IP address so you can get around proxies and such in AOL desktop for Mac. I tried using AOL desktop straight up but I still can not access sites at work such as GMAIL or YOUTUBE. Any idea how to get around this with AOL desktop? My friend assured me you can but he is not available for a couple of days.

I think you have your terminology wrong, you don't want to block your IP address. You can get around these proxies with a new proxy server that assigns an acceptable IP, a VPN connection, or a SOCKS connection.

Why are you using AOL Desktop at your work, if I may ask?

Safer than what? It's proprietary software run by a company that wants to control your data, just like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo. There is nothing inherently safe about it, just FYI.

AOL is most definitely not more safe. Send your IT guy over here so we can give him a good grilling.
