iTunes has become very slow

I have recently notices that iTunes is acting very sluggish. Just now I hit the space bar to pause the music and it took about 30 seconds to stop. The spinning ball appeared and it just sat until it finally stopped playing.

iTunes is also very slow when selecting the next song by clicking with the mouse. I also get the beach ball and it takes about 20 seconds to start playing.

My library has 22,000 songs, which could definitely be the problem.....but I am on a G5 Quad....and I have seen other libraries with 100k+ songs....

Maybe there is a preference file I can trash? I don't want to lose my play lists though...

Sounds like either a corrupted library or a hard drive issue.

Is there a way to check the library for corruption or fix it?

See if it's looking at the songs for gapless playback. That was my problem a few days ago. Since then, it's been running nice and quickly again.

I have the same issue. Seems to have happened with the recent updates. Movie playback is also choppy. I also have a large library of almost 20000 songs and thousands of videos.

Apple seems to be aware of the issue, but this document isn't too helpful:

iTunes 7.6 becomes unresponsive or hangs when opened or intermittently during use

Pretty lame, as if the onus for Apple's mistake is on the user, and it's the user's task to figure out through trial and error where the problem is located. Here's a hint, Apple: issue a fix already. Inexcusable. As much as I love Apple, the company pisses me off way too often.

Considering how user friendly it is to create and switch library, I find this suggestion by Apple just ammazing:
"Check iTunes to see if there are any rental movies in the iTunes library. If there are rentals, create a separate iTunes library for downloading and watching rented movies and only use your original iTunes library for music, ringtones, TV shows, and other content".
Is that all what they have for Apple's most distributed app?

If iTunes is Apple's future, well, the future is slow, buggy, uninspired.

If the issue persists even when you do not have a rented movie in your iTunes library, check for .mpg and .mpeg files in your library and remove them.
Excuse me? I have heaps of music videos in MPEG format. It's now up to me to remove them? They worked fine before without slowing things down. Just fix the f*cking issue!

Quite disturbing to say the least, kilechki. I won't be upgrading to iTunes 7.4 any time soon.

Whoa,

I never liked iTunes. I just want to play music, with no need of build a playlist for each of my albums all the time.
For those who think the same, try "Cog" (Cog - News). It's a wonderful FREE application just intended to PLAY MUSIC.
No libraries, no playlists, no sluggish interface, no online store, yadda yadda yadda.

Are you sure you know how to use iTunes? Based on this statement, I have to wonder. I can think of several different ways of viewing iTunes content that would allow you to play an album without building a playlist for it.
