Sorry, n00b question.

I haven't got a DVD writer, but I do have an external CD burner.

There's this film I'd like to check out which I can't get otherwise, so I'd like to download it off the web and reduce the file size so it'll fit on a CD.

What would be the easiest way to do this? (Not the downloading bit, the reducing and converting to VCD/SVCD size/format.)

Cheers.

Obligatory legality line: You shouldn't be downloading copyrighted content, including movies, even if you can't get it otherwise. You can always purchase copies off eBay or other online method and get region free DVD players for dirt cheat.

That said, if you own a DVD and are trying to shrink it to fit on smaler media like a CD, you could take your own purchased original DVD, and use software to convert it to other formats. I leave the "how" part for you to research.

The software I use to rip my own DVDs to iTunes for road trips to keep my son occupied is HandBrake. Handbrake is freeware, and cross platform. Google "Handbrake" for the link, and the website will provide you with the necessary documentation you need.

Toast includes an option to make a VCD from video files.

Handbrake does nothing to help you create a VCD.

Handbreak won't make a VCD but will put the movie into mp4 format to burn to a CD for viewing provided it will fit. It won't start up like putting in a DVD. Hopefully this film your talking about isn't pirated stuff.

I'd recommend Toast to do this. Beware though that VCDs look like 100% crap. Honestly, I'd rather not watch a movie then have to watch it as a VCD. You loose *a lot* of quality going from 4-8 GB to 700 MB.

Well, I did spend years on end looking at VHS tapes and analogue satellite, my TV set has a convergence error right now, and I'll probably only look at it once, so the quality isn't that important, to be honest.

Yep - consider putting in onto 2 cds - that's the standard in Asia - it's about the quality of VHS that way.
