is there such a thing for safari? or something i can use with safari? my homepage is www.soccernet.com but it has an auto downloading/playing video on the right side that i always have to stop manually.

i'd imagine there's a plugin for firefox that does this? anyone have a favourite?

I use safariblock, which will block ads, including flash-based ones. You could just add a manual filter for other sites' flash content.
