How could one set Safari so that the whole line in the address bar is selected when one clicks on it? I found that very convenient in Firefox, and would like to have the same setup in Safari.

3 clicks. Or click just above the text (as long as your cusror isn't an insertion point.)

Yep. 3 clicks or command-L. The reason Apple doesn't automatically highlight the entire URL is because that's nonstandard behavior for text boxes.

Just click on the site's little URL icon (favicon) to the left of the printed address.

Which is why I can't stand the behavior in Firefox when I use it. I only click in the URL field if I'm going to edit something. If I'm going to change the whole URL, I use Command+L and start typing the new URL. It makes more sense to use Command+L since you're going to be typing anyway.

Don't worry, you're not the only one who doesn't like this default behavior. If I am clicking in the URL box, I want to highlight the entire thing, readying the box to put in another URL. That's one reason I like to use Firefox. Triple-clicking is a pain in the ass, and I haven't trained myself to use Command+L, so it's not "second-nature."

That's what I do, too.
I never used CMD + L.
