For no apparent reason all Office programs now report something similar to the following when I try to open them:

Application Launch Failure
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices><>"

Any ideas? Not even sure where the disk is if I have to reinstall - bought it when it came out in 2001/2! Can copy individual files from a friend's working installation if that would help?

The Carbon Library is a relic of Classic apps running under OS X... I would toss the com.microsoft.word.plist file, log out, log in, see what happens.

You could also download the latest update for that version and reinstall it. Might replace the file.

Hmm...

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but no luck. Deleting plist did nothing; I couldn't even run the installer because it got exactly the same error message as the Office Apps... and I even tried moving Office 2004 from a friend's Mac (just for testing purposes of course) and its apps got the same message coming up. Very strange. I'm running 10.4 by the way.

Well that sounds more like a system problem than a MS Office problem. How about a nice fresh Archive & Install?

Yep, I think you're right Sherman. And now iTunes, Mail and Safari have also stopped working (while FireFox and TextEdit soldier on for basic tasks). Time to say goodbye to the 500MHz G3 iBook. Mr Mastercard is going to be buying me a Macbook Pro this week!
Cheers,
Will

He said 10.4.
