Is there any easy way to remove the searchbar from Safari 3.1? I would rather use the space for a longer URL bar.

I don't know if you can remove it, but you can put the cursor in between the end of the URL address field and the beginning of the search bar, click and drag to make the search bar much smaller.

You can edit the .nib file to remove it.
You must have the Developer Tools installed, and the file you're looking for is
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/ToolbarItems.nib
Back up a copy of the nib file, then open it in Interface Builder and when in interface builder, open the window, then delete the search field (Make sure you don't delete the split view). Save and quit Interface Builder and re-open Safari and it should be gone for good.

Thanks, but somehow, that does not sound like the easy way.

It's a 30 second job if you already have Xcode installed.

I never knew this. Wow. That is a really crappy deal from Apple. Now I'm even more glad I don't use Safari.
I filed a bug report. OooOoo!

Just because a thing is "free" doesn't mean it's good.
Besides, the only free version is the windows version. On the Mac you get Safari when you buy the OS.

No, Safari 3.1 Windows and Mac are free downloads from Apple.com and the Mac version is also included with Leopard free of charge, so its free software, if its free software it can't be a "crappy deal".

If you don't like it, you aren't forced to use it. You can always get Vista and Internet Explorer. I heard Microsoft lets you download IE 7 all you want

Right. I'll download 3.1 later today at work and see how well it works. Oh, but wait. I'll need to upgrade the system in order to run it. That's a free download too, right?

3.1 runs on Tiger too. And if you aren't even that far in the evolution of OS X, please shut up.

Wow. What a completely impertinent comment. Nice to know you keep in consideration that most businesses prefer to keep what they have and keep it working, system upgrades be damned.
At any rate, I disagree that tying the Google search to the location field is a good thing. It's only that way for one reason and it ain't for the benefit of the users.

Good thing WebKit is open source and there is some huge number of browsers based on it.
Shiira, OmniWeb, Trailblazer, iCab
Take your pick.

Do you mean the Search bar that appears in safari when you hit Apple-F ?
It stays for me *only* until I hit esc.
Does that not disappear it for you?

I suppose you use a faster and better and more special and cool and unique browser that didn't come with the OS and that you can edit and hack up-ways and sideways? How impressive...

"Address and Search" is a single item consisting of two panes.

In any case, what you should be doing is downloading InquisitorX to make that search field five times more useful, rather than just getting rid of it.

Yes, I am new here. . . .
Sorry, did not realize that they were the same. That was a very stupid oversight on my part. I will make sure to be more observant in the future.

Yeah, that's a little skeezy, but it's still a nice tool. Also, the affiliate links can now be disabled.
Safari on Windows lets you choose your search provider; I dunno why they don't do so on the Mac.

I decided to install AcidSearch v. 0.70 beta 3. It allows me to set up different search engines in the search box. I prefer Scroogle to Google, so I can at least use the search plugin of my choice.

Inquisitor is the better choice here:
Inquisitor 3. Spotlight for the web.

I'm not familiar with that particular hack (as all Safari extensions are) since I use Firefox which has an officially extensible search field, but...
If the developer isn't extremely forthcoming about the existence of affiliate links, people often feel used. I think there's an (unwarranted) assumption of altruism surrounding all freeware that people have yet to shake. Personally I too prefer that developers be forthcoming about the ways they monetize their software, especially when it's based on users' actions.
It's also worth noting that that particular developer (David Watanabe) is notorious for terrible customer service and support practices, so especially in this case I might not want to be supporting him.
