Vhs Tapes To Quicktime Movie

Hi,
I have some VHS tapes of the family. from which I would like to excerpt some portions
- to insert in my iMovie that I'm making on my iMAC
It was suggested to me that what I need to do is to convert my VHS tapes to a Quicktime format CD or DVD, that I can then edit out the clips that I need for my iMovie.
Is that the way to go and can you recommend any company to do that conversion ?
Are there any better suggestions for me ?

That's the way to go unless you want to capture from the VCR yourself which requires some sort of capture device for your iMac. If you don't have a VCR, don't have many tapes, and don't foresee doing this again in the future find a local company to convert them for you.
Check out videohelp.com. The site has massive amounts of info on digitizing video for computer editing. More will be about doing the capture yourself but I'm sure plenty of people have asked your question there.

If you DO have a VCR to play the tapes and you have a digital camcorder it may have an analog pass-thru - check the manual. You would connect the VCR to the analog input on the camcorder and it would be outputted through the firewire port to your Mac as DV. Not an ideal way to do it but cheap if you already have the equipment.

The EyeTV software and a compatible tuner for analog TV should be an excellent solution. Plug the VCR into the tuner and you can record an entire tape. Then edit with the outstanding software and save your final edit in almost any format. There are formats for iPod, DVD, and the usual MPEG 2 & 4, AVI, even DIVX if you have the codec.
ElGato (EyeTV) offers some tuners, but you can use their software with compatible tuners (I use a Plextor).

For $80 - $400 you can get a VHS / DVD Recorder that will take your tape and spit out a DVD.
You may find a used machine for less. Having it done for you as a service will cost about $10 per tape.
You can then rip the DVD to any format you want with Handbrake.
When you are done converting everything you own, sell the machine.
