What do most people recommend the size of an external drive be to be used exclusively for time machine backups? e.g. 2x your internal HD or what not...

Thanks

What can you afford?

A terabyte is nice for low-hassle and reasonable (~$280) price. 750GB offers a better value (~4GB/$ compared to ~3.5). 500GB offers a lower overall price at the same value as the terabyte.

I would suggest at least 150% of your drive as backup drive.

But it really depends on how much data you generate. If you shoot 100 RAW-pictures a day then you would want a much larger backup drive than when all the data you create is 3 e-mails a day and an occasional letter a week or so.
