I like to putz around with WebKit periodically. I noticed that the version number is 3.1 (5525.13) even if I install the latest nightly build. BTW, this also matches the latest Safari version number.

Wouldn't one expect that the "About Safari" would show the current version number?

And yes, I'm sure I'm actually running WebKit...the icon has the gold compass bezel and a mouseover says the application name is "WebKit."

You are still using Safari 3.1. It's just using a newer version of the WebKit framework to render the pages. The application labeled "WebKit" is basically just a wrapper that makes the current Safari use a newer version of WebKit.
