I'm reviving an old iMac for my daughter's use. iMac is running 10.2. I got my daughter a .mac mail account.

I am trying to set up the account in Mail and it isn't working. Can something check if any of my setting is correct:

Your Name: Daughter's Name
Email address: daughter.name@mac.com
incoming mail server: mail.mac.com
Mail Server Type: IMAP
User Name: daughter.name
Password: (i type in the email account password here)
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mac.com:daughter.name

When I click "OK", I am getting a "Connection Failed" message, stating that the SMTP server is not responding. What do I do?

Thanks.

My outgoing simply read "smtp.mac.com" and that works.

mine says
incoming : mail.mac.com
outgoing is : smtp.mac.com

make sure you're getting SMTP as in Send Mail To People. I know a lot of people get it confused some times.

make sure the user name is done like: joeblow/ password

NOT: joeblow@mac.com.

That's how mine's set up.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Are you able to receive mail? If it's just difficulty sending, try changing the smtp port to 587. For the past few months I've suddenly had to do that.

Also, check out .Mac Help

Setting up your desktop email application > Setting up Mac OS X Mail to receive your .Mac email:
If you're using a version of Mac OS X earlier than version 10.2, select the "Use authentication when sending mail" checkbox, then enter your member name and password in the SMTP User and SMTP Password fields.

Setting up your desktop email application > If you're having trouble sending mail may also help
