I've enjoyed following the uproar in the mac community over Adobe's announcement that Photoshop CS4 will not be 64-bit due to it being a carbon app.
Here's my question for those blaming Adobe for this turn of events: Why is Apple's own Final Cut still a 32-bit carbon app? After all, Final Cut is a far newer application with little legacy code and is not a cross-platform app. Apple also knew before anyone else that 64-bit carbon wasn't happening so they've had lots of time to work on it. And lastly, Final Cut Pro would benefit even more than Photoshop by going 64-bit.
It seems like Adobe clearly wants to make Photoshop 64-bit but Apple pulled out the rug from under them when they already were well into developing CS4, and based on their statements Photoshop may go 64-bit before Apple releases (or even announces) a 64-bit Final Cut. I hope folks will be fair and apply the same standards they have for Adobe to Apple.

While Final Cut Pro itself is solid, the rest of the studio is in sorely need of a rewrite. Motion, Soundtrack Pro 2 (they wrecked it going from 1 to 2) and DVD Studio Pro are laggards.

64-bit pro apps from Apple will start to trickle out far sooner than you think. There will be a FCP 64-bit demo this summer if not a full app.

With no 64-bit Carbon? Or are you thinking that they are going the "private framework" way?

My thought is that the engineers and programmers at Apple have had a far larger head start on a re-write than anyone else. Inside Apple it was clear that there wouldn't be 64-bit Carbon some time before WWDC 2007.
Already iMovie has been re-written into Cocoa and although very different in capabilities from FCP, it is indicative that Apple had already begun the re-writing in-house for its apps, perhaps in response to the looming lack of 64-bit Carbon.
I expect Apple started a FCP re-write at the same time as they started the iMovie re-write and for all its talents and programmers Adobe isn't going to be able to react as fast as Apple with its army of dedicated Mac programmers, inside information and motivation.
Given all that, a beta if not a release of Cocoa FCP this summer, is something I would put money on.
A private framework is also a possibility, but looking at how Apple's attitude is towards programming, not my first guess. It's policy now to use Cocoa for 64-bit apps, regardless of existing technology so I expect that to be the bottom line.
