Yes, it works very well. It opens up the X11 environment within your Mac and runs just fine. I've used that and Photoshop, and they both run well, although a little slow on occasion.
I use Gimp all the time on my MacBook and it works great. My biggest complaint is that it's very stupid about multiple monitor support—it always wants to put new windows on the secondary screen. Of course if you work with large images (and even if you don't!) you should increase your RAM. I'm running 4GB.
I recommend the builds here. Don't pay for the ripoff-ware that is MacGIMP.
