One of my friends recently asked me what Media Center software that we're available on the Mac? He is thinking about going AppleTV or Mac mini, but only if the software could rival that of his current Windows-based Media Center.

Also, his entire DVD-collection is stored in .IMG images, and this could be a problem. Is there any software that can play these files on the Mac? AFAIK, he currently opens them with something called Deamon Tools (?), which then enables the media center software to play it... (I think)

The extension .IMG is used by a great many things (including disk images in OS 9!). Without knowing what's inside the files, it's hard to say whether there's anything that could open them. I would be pretty darn surprised if GraphicConverter could not open them, though.

vlc can play them videolan.org - though vlc is not a media center software, it is a player. front row is the only media center software on the mac i can think of. i assume the imgs are images of dvd's which you should be able to mount and play in front row as a dvd.

Even though he's thinking about switching to a Mac? I didn't even know .img disk image files were used on the PC - I thought they were created by Toast primarily.
