Hi All,

I just purchased the MacUpdate bundle (love it!) and I have Typonator running which is a great app but... I'd like to remove the menu bar icon (yet keep it running). It's a pretty ugly icon and I just don't need access to it that often. A bit silly but it's been driving me nuts as I keep on clicking it instead of my google notifier icon.

I've researched around and can't find any way to remove it. Clicking CMD and dragging it away doesn't work, I modified this hint for removing spotlight macosxhints.com - 10.5: Remove the Spotlight menu bar icon
sudo chmod 0 /Users/*myusername*/Applications/Typinator.app
in terminal where *myusername* is my name but that doesn't work.

I also tried under System Prefs - Accounts - Login Items making Typinator hidden.

Any hack in terminal or by changing a setting in the package contents that will remove the icon?

sudo chmod 0 /Users/*myusername*/Applications/Typinator.app

You have your Applications folder under your user account?

I don't have Typinator myself - is it a background application?

Sorry no, I meant to write sudo chmod 0 /Applications/Typinator.app I actually first tried in terminal that command that I first wrote and realized I had the wrong path.. and copied over the wrong command. At any rate, when I did that it just made the application un-openable.

Anyway, well typinator works in a weird way. Basically you open the program and the icon comes up in the dock, then in the preferences you can "hide" the dock icon and you're left with just the menu bar icon. It seems like it mocks being a background application... I want it to be a full background application. Don't know if it's even possible.

So I found a way to "remove" the icon. Basically I was toying with the idea of changing the look of the icon to something more bearable. So I went into the Applications folder, clicked "Show Package Contents" then went into Resources and found the icon "Tsmall.pdf". While I was thinking "how can I change it to look better" I thought, hey why not just delete it.

So I created a new folder within Resources called "menubaricons" and moved all the menu icons in them to that folder (in case I ever needed them again). I restarted Typinator and voila, no icon in the menu bar. But if I click right beside the left most icon, the Typinator menu still comes down. So basically I still have access to the menu without the ugly icon. Now hopefully typinator will be the last program to load on startup as it seems to place hold a certain amount of area in the bar even if there's no icon. If it's not the last to load, I imagine there would be a strange blank space.

Not the most elegant but works, if anyone else has any other suggestions I'm open!
