I recently purchased iWork 08 here in Japan.
I'm wondering if you can add kana characters over the kanji (furigana) as you can with MS Word???

No, there is no support for ruby text in any of the iWork apps. No vertical writing support either, unfortunately.

If you want free software with those capabilities I recommend NeoOffice.

Thanks for the info.
Although good programs in their own right, I'm slowly beginning to realize the limitations of iWork (and Safari). I was hoping to get away from Office, but I may have to go back (I've tried openoffice before but found it buggy).

NeoOffice has improved a lot since its early days. You might try giving it another shot.
