Ok I have my computer image built the way I want it and I have rebuilt the Default user Profile so that all Active Directory network Users who login will get the same setting, setup etc.

lone behold, the only setting I can not get to stick is the "Default Browser" I do not want it set to Safari as safari has alway had issues with working with webmail and always asks for a password when opening the browser. I have tried resetting to Camino, FireFox etc. and through I copy all the files relating to any browser, seems that when the user logs in, still defaults to Safari.

Any ideas?

Are any of the users using FileVault? If so... that's your problem. There's a known bug with FileVault that crept in around 10.4.7 or so and carried forward to 10.5.x. Basically, some preference gets corrupted, or doesn't get saved properly so that the default apps get reset on login and/or restart.

It's not turned on.

Ahh, of course, as soon as I read your reply I realized that's where it should be.
Just creating a master image of the computer now.... so will test after image is created.

Thanks,

I copied the com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and did not make the change for default browser.

Went through a number of the .plist files and can not seem to track down the specific file that sets the default browser.

I have a workgroup manager server though I configure and make all the custom settings to the default user profile because a lot can not be controlled from the WGM server, but you would think that the option for default browser would be one?

Did you try com.apple.internetconfig.plist like I said? The internetconfigpriv file is not the right one.

I just got a G5 iMac on Saturday. It's secondhand from my uncle, albeit only a few weeks old.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why every time I logout and log back in or restart, all my settings have been reverted to the default.

I cannot understand why every time I change the user settings for the only admin account there is, it is created as another user folder, and is not saved to the home account.

I am so frustrated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you rename your home folder (the one with a house icon)? If so, that is the source of your problems. I think there is a sticky at the top of the forum that deals with this.

Just went through and from what I can tell, on the newly upgraded server with OS X Leopard the option is not there. Checked all the options under Preferences and could not find anything.

However, just out OS X Tiger server and the option is there. So looks like they removed the option to set the default browser or they moved it and I'm blind

be cool if this could be added.

I have the preference working fine, but when the new user logs in, and go to open a url to our ticket system or any other url link that we have on the desktop, the user gets bugged with the following message.

have made sure the browser prefs are copied, and anything else that gets changed/modified at the same specific time that I select "open"

That's LaunchServices. If you will only have one user in your image that everyone shares, then you need to launch every app once and deal with that dialog. If you will have network users, then I don't know of a way to get rid of it. The LaunchServices cache is a local file on the computer and is unique to each user. If you've got a small number of network users, then you could populate the cache for each user. However, if you're like me and have 15000+ accounts, then that is not a viable solution. My users just deal with it.

Bummer... it is gone in Leopard. You can still add the pref under the details tab.

Had thought about that, but we keep a few different browsers on the computer images as we have web development courses and request to have the browsers to test with.

ya, we have all the Mac's running with Active Directory login, so even through we have a large amount of PC users, the users pool able to log into these computers is over 20,000+
