OK, so I have some .avi files (I know, a file format, not a codecs), that, when I open in VLC I get audio, not video, and when I open in QT player, I get video, not audio. When I import to iMovie, I get audio only.
What do I need to (eventually) open these in iMovie HD (07)?

I had clients with a cheap Panasonic AVCHD camcorder, and the ONLY thing I got to work with that .avi format was ffmpegX.

Use that to convert directly to DV; works like a charm.
