hi all. i have been ripping many of my dvds to my imac so i can watch them on my atv. i use handbrake to convert, then import to itunes. it appears that itunes creates a duplicate of this when it is importing it into the library. for example, if i delete a movie from itunes it asks if i want to throw it in the trash. if i do this, it does not affect the original rip, which is sitting in the movies folder.

so my question is, does itunes create a duplicate for itself? if so, why?!?! that seems ridiculous. am i supposed to delete the original that i create in the movies folder? any thoughts here? thanks!

I'm guessing you have "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when importing" checked in the iTunes preferences.

i do have that checked for music. why does it do this for movies if they are not music?

for music, my itunes folder is the "music" directory. i put everything there anyway, therefore it doesn't actually duplicate it (itunes is not allowed to manage my music).

i just noticed that the movie files are in the movies directory in my itunes music folder. damn. can i disable this for movies somehow?

thanks for the quick reply!

I don't know of any easy way around it, but check out this tip on Mac OS X Hints:

I'm having the same problem with itunes... I think.

I want to add an album to itunes and have it show me only the one entry into the library for the song it copied into the library.

When I DL'd some music I put it on my desktop to get at easy. I opened iTunes and then went to file>add to library and it adds them. I do have copy to itunes library checked but it used to just add one copy. Now when I do it I've got 2 copies of every song.??? I have to go back and command click the dupe and delete them every time I add an album to my library. What can I do so that itunes will add only one song on the list?
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
