In our office we have a G5 tower running Mac OS X Server 10.4. . All of our other computers on the network connect to the mail server just fine - but wired and wirelessly (and both Macs and PCs). However, we have 1 MacBook Pro (wireless) that will not connect to the mail server.

The MacBook Pro is running 10.4.11 - and is able to connect to the server for file access. But when using Mail, it cannot connect to the IMAP mail server. I tried my personal Gmail IMAP account and it was able to connect just fine.

The MacBook is running bootcamp, but when using Outlook Express in Windows, it still cannot connect to the mail server.

When the MacBook has a wired connection to the network, Mail locks up immediately on opening. You eventually have to force quit out of the program, since nothing opens.

Are there any ideas or suggestions that I could try to help get this machine connecting to the mail server? If you need any additional information, please let me know and I would be happy to help.

Any advice would be great so that we no longer have to use an old Lime iMac as a mail station for the user of the MacBook Pro.

Thanks in advance!

The problem has nothing to do with your hardware, IMAP doesn't care what machine or OS the client runs on as long as it speaks proper IMAP.

Your problem is either a network connectivity issue, or a client configuration issue. I would first test the former by doing a:

telnet <imapserver> 143

and

telnet <imapserver> 993

where IMAP server is the name or IP of your IMAP server

I tried both and received the same message:

"Could not open connection to the host on port ###" (either 143 or 993)

Which means that the MBP can't see the IMAP server. Check to make sure the MBP has permission on the server to access the machine and that Mail is configured correctly to connect to the server. There could also be a firewall or something set up on the MBP blocking access.

There is no mail configuration that will work to access IMAP if these connectivity tests fail, providing that the IPs/IMAP machine name you are using for the test and within your mail client match. These tests tell us that the IMAP server is unavailable from your IP, period.

Like iBook_steve says though, a firewall is indeed a likely culprit.
