So I'm doing some work with DVD files. I used MacTheRipper to extract the VOB files, and now I want to split the files. I want to take a VOB file, copy a portion of it, and then make that portion a new video file. Basically I want to re-arrange the order of events in a certain VOB file. Then take all those files and slap them on a new DVD using iMovie. What software would I need to do this. Any favs or ones to stay away from? Thanks.

AFAIK, you would first need to import and convert VOB to a different format, like one that iMovie can read.

I'd convert them first to MP4 at high quality.

But I'm no expert at all in video editing, so someone with a clue might wanna chime in.

VOB is just a container for MPEG2 video. If you do it the way you've proposed, you're going to take a significant quality hit twice (MPEG2->MPEG4->MPEG2) because iDVD is braindead (won't accept MPEG2 source!). If you want to go this way, use Handbrake to convert your DVD to a format that iMovie can accept.

I'd suggest editing with MPEG Streamclip and authoring the DVD with VisualHub for zero quality loss.

Not a free option but Cinematize can help you. There is a demo available to download here… Miraizon

Cinamatize seems great and all, but thye're not commercial friendly it seems. I'll play with Handbrake, Mpeg, and Visual. It's not got to be 1:1 quality, but I think these will get me where I need to be. Thanks for the help.
