I have Firefox 2.0.0.14, and I have downloaded and installed the latest Adobe Acrobat listed on the Adobe downloads page for Mac, but while it seemed to load in Safari (and I can open a .pdf in that program), it does not work in Firefox? What am I not doing?

The last I heard was that there is no Firefox Adobe plugin for Intel Macs. One has to use helper applications to read .pdf files. The other problem with Firefox for Mac is that it only sees system default applications. I use the extension MIME Edit to set other applications of my choice as helpers for various file types.

True in the strictest sense, but not true in a functional sense. There's no add on from Adobe for Firefox, but there IS a plug in that lets you open PDFs in your browser on any OS X Mac. Go here for the Schubert|it PDF plug in. Schubert's plug in is not compatible with Internet Explorer, but otherwise is browser-independent.

From looking at the site, the plugin is PPC only which means the OP (or anyone else) will have to set FF to open using Rosetta.

There's a plugin specifically for FF that works just fine.

Oops, I missed the PPC bit (or maybe I saw it and expected the "...or Intel..." stuff that wasn't there and just assumed...). But thanks for the follow up with a plugin that works.

No problem. For a minute there, I thought the Schubert|it plugin was finally universal!

I downloaded and installed into Firefox the pdf download plugin, but I still get a message saying a plugin is needed when I encounter a pdf document in a website.

Weird. I think you have to set the preference in the settings for the plugin first, but not sure.

In Firefox, go to the Tools menu. Under Add Ons you should see a menu item called PDF..... - options. Click on that. This is the window I see when I do that:

Yes, I get that box and have that page set exactly as you do. What about the PDF opening tab?

Not sure, I've set the preference once and was never bothered by anything afterwards.

The plug-in has just been updated to 10.0.1.2 as of yesterday. Maybe it fixes your bug.

Then, just read on Ars Technica's Infinite Loop - this one's new from Google Code:
