can't import mp3s into itunes

For years I have been able to download an mp3, and either double-click it or drag it into itunes, then it would appear in the library and I could play it. For some reason, this has stopped working. I've tried dragging, double-clicking, and File > Import. And reinstalled iTunes (7.6.2 (9)). Why won't this work? It's infuriating!

And I'm not even pirating anything. These are legal, unprotected mp3 files, from a variety of sources.

Any help would be appreciated before I get mad enough to chuck my macbook across the room!

Create a new user account and try it from that account. If it works there, it's something with your account.
