I've been trying to log into my hotmail account all day but the same page keeps coming up saying:

The page you're trying to find is either temporarily unavailable or no longer exists.

Coincidentally, Adium isn't able to connect neither.

Is Hotmail/MSN down? Or is it just me?

Thanks.

Adium Beta - We do it right so they don't have to.

Also, this might be a good read if it applies to you:

Thanks 64Stang06. Did Adium update.

The real issue is that everything was working fine until this morning. All of a sudden, no Hotmail, and no Adium.

Strange.

Apparently I'm the only one with this problem (phenomena)

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

It's starting to sound as if my system or network has been compromised.

Funnily enough, I'm able to go to Hotmail with my old iBook hard-wired to router in living room, but still get "This Page Does Not Exist" when with my MacBook in office (wireless on same router).

Is this a port issue? I tried several things...

I looked into the DNS thing. I'm contemplating it. But why would I suddenly need such a thing? What happened?

And what does that have to do with the one single problematic site? (Hotmail)

What's there to contemplate? It's free and lots of members here use it. More importantly, troubleshooting DNS is an important step for network issues.

Or first try flushing your DNS cache.
In 10.4 and earlier, DNS cache is handled by lookupd. Leopard (10.5) replaces it with dscacheutil. Execute the following in a terminal to clear your DNS cache.

# 10.4 and earlier:
$ sudo lookupd -flushcache

# Leopard (10.5) and later:
$ sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

I get this at home, but not at work. Strange. Will try the dnscache thing when I get home.

Very strange. This still persists (both those links and connecting via Adium gives me the page does not exist page (can be seen in the adium debug window) through:

1) Flushing DNS cache several times
2) A restart
3) 30 second cold restart of modem
4) Restart of Airport basestation

Curiouser and curiouser…

Seems we are not the only ones:

Apple - Support - Discussions - Mac unable to access www.hotmail.com ...

Have changed to OpenDNS and no dice.

Problem solved.

You've probably edited your hosts file in the past to get around a Leopard/Adium bug that existed once, hardwiring the Hotmail/live domains to their IP.

Just replace your host file with this one and you should have no more problems (or ads)

My fix works.

Open terminal.

Copy and paste in:

sudo pico /etc/hosts

Type in your password.

Find the lines that contain hotmail.com and live.com and remove them. (Hint: You can use ctrl-w to search)

Ctrl-x, Y, Return
