in Acrobat pro 9 there seems to be some bugs. if I click on any of the screen I get a 'mask' or 'box' that travels around w me and I can't get rid of it.

its some sort of selection tool or something.

Id like to get out of Acrobat 9 as my pref for opening pdfs and go back to Acrobat 8 or even Preview

but haven't figured out how to do that.

You can just change the application association for .pdf files through Get Info.
