the last 3 times I tried to open a .dmg, from different companies, nothing happened for about a minute, then a warning box apprears that says the disk image failed to mount because (name of file) Device not configured.

Did search for .dmg mounting and device not configured.
What device, how do I configure it?

It probably means that there is something wrong with something inside the DMG. They can be surprisingly complicated and include block and character devices (well...sort of...).

I can think of two things off the top of my head: Try using "hdiutil verify" on that image. It might just tell you that it is corrupt. The second idea is that you might be trying a newer DMG on an older computer. If you read through the hdiutil man page you will find that there are a number of formats, and that those formats have developed over time.

The last idea is that I think the message when you try and mount a shadow DMG without the one it wraps looks something like that. Are you sure that this DMG is what you think it is?
