hi all. my imac had to go the apple store to get fixed (replaced the dead hdd, bad lcd and also the glass lcd cover). anyway, i got it back and they installed leopard on it for me, but all my stuff is obviously gone (i.e. files, apps, etc.) no worries though.... i have everything backed up with TM. when i booted the imac, it went through the normal OS setup and asked if i want to transfer my data. i opted for the transfer everything from a TM backup.

my question is: will this fully restore my imac to its previous configuration (apps, files, permissions, preferences, etc.) or did i need to do something else (like not transfer, but rather *restore* or something)?

thanks for the help!

Yes, TM will fully restore everything. I took my iMac for a bad hard drive and lcd replacement. Got home, chose TM backup, and went to bed. Got up the next morning and everything was back where it should be.

Restoring from a Time Machine backup is like restoring from a clone: you get a bootable copy of your old harddrive at the time of the last backup. You don't need to reinstall any applications, for instance.

If you were to use Migration Assistant, OS X would transfer your data, settings and most applications, but over a fresh install of OS X.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

thanks for confirming that, but now i seem to have a problem.

my data transfer is failing. after a looooooong time, i get a transfer error that says it is prevented from finishing. the two error i get are 1) some documents could not be transfered, and 2) my user could not be created. the document that could not be transfered seems to be a rip of one of my dvds (used for apple tv).

this has happened 3 times now and it always seems to fail with this same error. this sucks! any ideas what is going wrong or what i should try now?
