My daughter sends me pictures via email all the time - i got my first batch yesterday (first since I became a Mac convert) and "saved" them using the "save" button on the email itself - but I have no clue where they saved to -- anyone care to shed a little light please

Save them (or something else from Mail) again. That will let you see where. Though I would guess it defaults to ~/Downloads. At the very least you can do a search for pictures.

Also, don't be afraid to use the Help menu. It's really quite... helpful.

The save button saves messages to the default location with no prompts...
MaIl -> Preferences -> General -> Download folder
