I teach...sometimes I step away from the computer and I want to lock it so no one can see grades and such. I don't want to log out and log back in. Is there a screen lock type program that I could enter a password to unlock the screen?
Thanks.

Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access
Keychain Access->Preferences->General->Show Status in Menu Bar
In the menubar item select: Lock Screen

You can also have the screen saver require a password to unlock and use a hot corner to lock the screen on demand. Another option is to enable Fast User Switching and select Login Window from the FUS menu.

The application SizzlingKeys lets you set a key combination that takes the screen to the login window but doesn't log you out - it uses the fast user switching mechanism.

I have been done what TETENAL says for ages, no need to look further.

Except that puts another item in your menubar, and minimalists like me don't like that. A key combination is much cleaner in my opinion.

Or, turn on fast user switching and then go to login window without logging out.

Learn something new everyday, thank you for this suggestion. I've been looking for this exact solution but didn't know it was built-in.
