I have a new MB, and have slowly moved things from my desktop. I didn't do the migration, because I wanted to start fresh.

I use QuicKeys, though, frankly, I've had difficulties with version 3 for some time. And for some reason, I ma finding it impossible to get it to work at all. I'm using 3.1 (version) and IT WILL NOT WORK. At all. I think I managed to find some info on this last week, the first time I tried making it work, and it told me to upgrade. SO I downloaded the upgrade, and ran it as a demo, and at least managed to get a few macros up and running. Then I restarted the computer, and for some reason, quickeys went away. I can authorize version 3.1 -- which does not work -- but can't get quickeys to let me use the newer version as a demo.

So, since I'm sitting in a hospital waiting room with time on my hands, I decided to try again. Still nothing, so I downloaded Keyboard Maestro to try that out. OK, is there something crazed about my new laptop? Maestro WILL NOT let me use function keys. Flat out. Won't. I wanted to assign F5, with the function key, to open Safari. Won't assign it. won't assign any function key at all. I tried a different combo that stayed away from function keys, and that worked, but that's not what I want. I'm used to function keys to open various applications -- been doing it for years -- and I want to again.

Anyone have any experience? If nothing else, do you ahve any other recommendations for something to open applications, type in my email automatically and otherwise trigger macros and actions?

Thanks in advance. I'm beyond frustrated.

OK, I added ikey to my "try" list and STILL had trouble with function keys! Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with my MacBook.

I finally upgraded the application and -- since I was by now back home, as opposed to when I posted the first time -- was able to enter proper serial numbers and activation keys. I also messed around with system preferences, though for the life of me I don't remember which one.

And -- while I couldn't get Maestro or iKey to work, QuicKeys DOES work with function keys, etc., now. At the very least, the combos I'm used to using are working, and it looks like I can go to two trying some new ones. I'm not sure QuicKeys is a program I would ever recommend, but at this point I've been using it for many years, so at least I have a nodding familiarity with it.
