The Flash player plugin sucks 100% of CPU in Safari and stutters and jerks on video sites like Hulu, Joost and even YouTube (high quality). Sometimes just visiting a site with Flash ads is all it takes to spike the CPU.

Of course, I am running a fairly old Titanium PowerBook 1Ghz.
What is the Safari + Flash player performance like on newer Macs?

PowerBook 1Ghz
1GB
10.4.11 PPC
Safari 3.2.1
Flash plugin 10.0.12.36

Well, it works great for me albeit I don't visit that kind of sites. My sort-of-flash-benchmark is Stefan Sagmeister site, I tell you in advance your Mac is going to show it almost as a frame by frame animation, cause that's what happens with my MDD 1,25 GHz Power Mac. With my Mac Pro -lowest end model 2.0 GHz- it runs nicely. No complaints.

The Mac version of Flash is a major embarrassment, that's for dang sure!

Much better on Intel Macs than PPC (I upgraded a month ago, and it used to do the same for me). No longer any noticeable CPU use.

It is noticeably better on the Intel Macs, but it still sucks.

Oh. My. God.

That's got to be the worst Flash coding ever, as on my 2.1GHz C2D MacBook, it took 130% CPU for that animation alone, even though it's just a couple of stripes moving around. Absurd.

Every badly performing app is faster under faster hardware, but calling faster hardware the solution to software issues is a chainsaw approach to optimization, and it is my opinion that Adobe should not be allowed to get away with this. It is a little different since the Flash player is free, but even then we can make our discontent known by not using it - not as users but as developers. There is competition for Flash now in libraries such as Scriptaculous, and big efforts underway to optimize Javascript at the browser level. The vast majority of Flash sites incorporate simple animations that can be handled by Scriptaculous, and media player wrappers.

Yeah, and if you really wanted that effect you could recreate that with Javascript

About the only thing you couldn't recreate easily (without relying on a browser plugin) is the clickey sounds when you click on a button. I hate that kind of thing anyway, and would be annoyed if I was made to download a plug-in just for the pleasure of hearing those sounds
