iAntiVirus
MacNN first look
Pros:
Free for individuals
Only worries about Mac viruses
Cons:
Only worries about Mac viruses, and many of those are Classic viruses
----
I currently don't run an antivirus program on my Mac, and the price is right for this app, but I'm wondering if it's kind of a waste of time to run this antivirus program if it doesn't get 99.9% of viruses out there... those for Windows machines.
My machines at home are all Macs (except one I basically never use), but it seems rather odd that this program ignores them all... and then worries about old Mac Classic viruses.
Whaddya think, waste of time?

Doesn't sound like a waste of time to me. Like other Mac AV apps, it detects malware, trojans...

I'd go with ClamXav instead. It detects Windows malware, and the GUI is written by a member of this forum, I believe.

It has no engine or real-time scanner that runs in the background.

Sure it does - I have ClamXav Sentry watching my Mail and Downloads folders - anything that gets downloaded to one of those places gets automatically scanned.
Sure, that's not very sophisticated, but hey, at least ClamXav can detect actual viruses and not just proofs of concept and ancient malware that runs on System 6 and below.

My statement was based on its lack of "sophistication." I would not call watching a downloads folder a real-time scanner.
Don't get me wrong, I think Clam AV is great, powerful software. Just the fact that it is open-source means it gets +100 bonus points form me. However, I think it needs to have a less complicated UI and a more universal real-time scanner.

An antivirus program that only protects against Mac viruses? It's like sunscreen that only works on wooly mammoths.
BTW, Mactel = Mac with an Intel chip, such as those made in the last two years.

Don't feel bad. Even I'm not that doctrinaire about it anymore, since I got my MBP.

Hmmm... I wasn't aware of ClamXav Sentry. I'll have to check that out. Come to think of it, I'd add to that my Parallels shared folder. Even though I'm on a Mac, I still running Windows through Parallels.
I had been used ClamXav before, but it was a real pain having to force scans manually all the time.

virus |ˈvīrəs|
noun
an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host : [as adj. ] a virus infection.
• informal an infection or disease caused by such an agent.
• figurative a harmful or corrupting influence : the virus of cruelty that is latent in all human beings.
• (also computer virus) a piece of code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.
ORIGIN late Middle English (denoting the venom of a snake): from Latin, literally ‘slimy liquid, poison.’ The earlier medical sense, superseded by the current use as a result of improved scientific understanding, was [a substance produced in the body as the result of disease, esp. one that is capable of infecting others with the same disease.]
