I recently uninstalled Norton Antivirus 10.0 on my PowerPC iMac (OS 10.5.6). Now, every time I turn on my backup external hard drive to have Time Machine back up my files, a Norton widow pops up and tells me it's scanning all the files on the backup drive. This didn't happen when I had Norton installed! At least, I don't remember it doing so. It's an easy matter to close the window and stop the scanning, but I would like to stop it appearing each time I turn on the drive. How can I do this?
Thank you.

Some part of Norton is NOT uninstalled. If you've manually uninstalled Norton, you've missed something. It's the "Scan on Mount" function that's doing this, and you can adjust its behavior though the options in the menu gadget that shows up in the right hand side of the top menu (I can't remember the name of these gadgets at the moment).

It may be simplest to just reinstall the whole package. To UNinstall it, you need to use the program disc; open the "Symantec Solutions" folder on the disc and double click on the "Symantec Uninstaller". That should take care of the whole thing.

ghporter--Your advice was spot on. I reinstalled then uninstalled from the disk and the annoying scanning window no longer pops up.
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.

It was easy, and I wanted to keep this thread from being derailed by people who, for some reason, believe that Norton will kick your dog and give your daughter a social disease. You just have to be careful what you do with such a powerful application, especially since by its nature it digs deep into the OS to protect you. I'm glad you didn't have any other issues getting in the way of this fix.
