Actually it's a marital counseling issue... since I upgraded wife's Leopard (iBook G3) FireFox as far as it would upgrade (2.0.0.18)... she is distressed:
Now when a site's hotlink sets target ="_blank" she no longer gets a new WINDOW, but a new TAB.
I can find no setting to change this.
My FireFox 3.0.x doesn't do such (but I can't find a way to change TO "new Tab" for "_blank" either.
Can anybody help me out of this hot water. In most respects the upgrade to 2.0.0.18 is better, but she really resents being forced to sacrifice screen real estate to the tabs ...
Oh, and to boot: FF does not warn (in status bar) when a link is going to open in a new window/tab (whereas Safari nicely does) - so there's no easy warning for her to Cmd-Opt-Shift or whatever FF takes for to open hotlink in new window.
Got any suggestions? Tricks?

I have the option to choose between pages opening in a new window or tab in Firefox 3, I'm sure it was there in version 2 also.
As for not knowing how a link will open - I hate that too so I'm just in the habit of always command + clicking.

In the Tabs Preference (in 3, possibly in 2), the very first option is "New pages should open in[*] a new tab [] a new window"

Thanks guys.
I did check those settings: they seem to have NOTHING to do with how LINKS (with target="_blank") open new windows (never tabs, so far as I can tell).
They *will* determine what happens upon Cmd-N: new window vs. new tab.
... but no effect on the link-opening.

Apparently because he said that was as high as Firefox would go on her G3 iBook...

But she's running Leopard and I'm skeptical that a web browser does CPU detection.

Ver 3's release notes even mention that you have to be running Leopard, and at least have a G3 processor and 128MB of RAM (256 recommended)... Now I'm wondering how he decided that Ver 3 was a no-go.

I don't know about Firefox 2 but in Firefox 3 doing seanc's method (choose open in new window) does solve the problem and I believe it's always been this way. I've just tested it out myself on my Firefox 3. Target=_blank will open a new window instead of in a tab.
I prefer opening new windows in tabs though and if your wife is bothered by how much space tabs take up you can always use a skin theme that uses smaller tabs.
If you are still having problems then try downloading Firefox 3 and use it instead of Firefox 2. Also FYI Firefox 2.0.0.18 isn't the highest Firefox 2 will go. It's up to 2.0.0.20 now.

The feature is in your preference menu and then the tabs section. Tell Firefox to open new pages in a new window and it should work for you.

My bad: Wife has OS 10.3 ( Panther): The max for a G3.
Being stuck at Tiger myself and thinking of Leopards, I get my cats mis-spoke.
But thank you, MDuell... I think when I get to her machine again your http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow may be the secret !
@ EndlessMac: that does not affect how pages are opened from hotlinks, just from Cmd-N

Tiger supports the G3. I'm posting this from from a iBook G3 with 10.4 installed and Safari 3.2.1.

That's VERY good news, Tetenal.
Now we've got the option to upgrade the machine's OS...
...or think about going to a MacBook (I'd just as soon have her able to go to Leopard.
