No problems until this morning, when I try to insert cells, rows or columns, I get the above error message.
If I open a new worksheet and copy all across, I can insert,
AFAIK I have done nothing to prefs etc
HELP !!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211769 does not really help me, so far.
However, Time machine to yesterdays Excel saves the day, so I must have done something without realising it.
All I did do was save as, then sort the saved as version for a small project.
I do not use comments.
Whoops, spoke too soon, older version allowed me to insert, but after saving, would not.
So, my (temporary ?) solution is to open New SS and copy data across, so far, so good.

My first inclination would be to think that you had somehow added "something" in each cell all the way across (or down), so that there's "something" that's at the edge of the sheet. I don't know what the cell width/height limitations of Excel 2008 are, but they must be really, really large, and I have no clue how one might accidentally add invisible contents to that many cells, but that's the first working theory I'd go with. To test this, you may want to just mark a kazillion "empty" cells across and below and choose "clear" from the Edit menu, then see if you can insert cells. It's worth a shot.

Glenn is right.
You must have accidentally put some content in some of the cells far to the right or bottom.
I'm not sure, but it is possible that even some formatting makes Excel believe you have content in those cells.
If nothing else works, copy the "used" portion of your spreadsheet into a brand new spreadsheet, and work from there.

I couldn't find any such content, my get around, as you suggest, of copying and pasting seems to be working.
