Hi All,

Can someone please explain to me the following two issues with regard to iDVD?:

1) Why does iDVD force you to have blank media in the drive during the "processing" of the movie? It doesn't seem relevant, and I can imagine many instances when I want to do 100% of the encoding up until I'm ready to burn. Not to mention that they should allow you to simply output ISOs or something that that nature.

2) Why does the infamous "Multiplexer Error" force you to start from near the beginning of the "processing" process?

I know these developers aren't idiots, but their ways are lost on me.

You can save it as a disk image very easily. Then later just use Disk Utility to burn the image and you will have a DVD.

Thanks for the post. I ran into an issue when I attempted to do so. Basically it warned me that it wasn't wise to create IMGs of projects that required DL disks as they might not play in many DVD players. I'm not sufficiently familiar with the DVD spec to understand why that is even an issue, but it obviously is. I guess boiling it down to 1s and 0s is a bit of an oversimplification...?

That said, why do I consistently get the "Multiplexer Error"? I've read posts about this and I've done everything (e.g. slowed burning speed, ensured way more than 10GB was available, etc) except change the actual media (DVD+R DL is all I currently have with me...I'll grab some -R tomorrow).

There's no such thing has DVD-R DL, only +R.

As suggested, just create the disk image. Ignore the warning. It should play fine. I've never found a reason to burn a disk directly from iDVD. I always create an image.

As you can see from the dialog you clicked away when burning to an image:

Your project should ideally be burned onto double-layer DVD.

If you stick in a single-layer DVD, it will be rendered down to fit on that medium.

Hence, iDVD needs to know what type of medium you'll be burning to.

Well, you specify the DVD type in the "Project Information" so that shouldn't be an issue. As was suggested, I'm just going to give the image creation a try.

Ah, you do?

Sorry 'bout that.

Don't really use iDVD.

Ok, I tried simply outputting the project to an IMG, and I'm still getting "Multiplexer Error". The error says the issue is with formatting. I'm not sure how this is so with an IMG, but it's happening. Also, why does it not save the already multiplexed data without forcing me to go back by nearly 2 hours in the process? What is occurring in that 2 hour period that: 1) is temporary enough that it doesn't actually waste a real DVD, but 2) somehow can't (or doesn't choose to) remember where it "temporarily" stored the data. Very frustrating...

I think there's more likely something wrong with your project. You could have a corrupted movie or photo that is killing the processing. Working on a copy of your project, try removing a few media items and process again. The destination of the project should not be the reason for iDVD to stop processing.
